Mira Mesa

Mira Mesa is a community within the city of San Diego roughly bound by Interstate 15 to the east, Interstate 805 to the west, Los Penasquitos Canyon to the north and the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar to the south. The community plan area also includes the neighborhoods of Sorrento Valley and Sorrento Mesa.

Around the time of World War II, the area was used by the United States Army and Navy as testing areas, landing fields and bombing areas. Beginning in 1969, a housing boom overtook Mira Mesa and later led to the implementation of San Diego Miramar College and Hourglass Field Community Park. Since its’ beginning, Mira Mesa has been largely influenced by the military located at the adjacent NAS Miramar. For nearly 30 years the Navy’s Top Gun School (cue Tom Cruise karaoke) was located here and many pilots made their home in the area.

By the late 1990’s the community had undergone increased expansion to accommodate the thousands of new residents attracted to the area’s proximity to companies such as UC San Diego, MCAS Miramar and Qualcomm, along with dozens of biotech and pharmaceutical companies.

With over 80,000 residents including students, hi-tech employees, families and singles, the community maintains a diverse community inviting many to take advantage of all that it has to offer.
