Point Loma

Point Loma is a seaside community bordered on the west and south by the Pacific Ocean, the east by San Diego Bay and Old Town, and the north by the San Diego River. Geographically it is a hilly peninsula with a population of about 55,000 residents. Historically it is claimed to be the original place where Europeans landed in California and thus credited “where California began”. Point Loma is currently home to two military bases, a national cemetery, national monument, Point Loma Nazarene University, and many residential and commercial neighborhoods. The city’s best-known landmark is the Old Point Loma Lighthouse, located within the Cabrillo National Monument and listed on the National Register of Historical Places.

On the west side of the peninsula are sandstone cliffs known as the “Sunset Cliffs”. The cliffs are known for their gorgeous views of the Pacific Ocean and are one of the few sites in California containing dinosaur fossils.

Most neighborhoods in Point Loma consist primarily of single-family homes. The retail and commercial hub of the city is Point Loma Village, though the newest commercial and retail area can be found at Liberty Station, site of the former Naval Training Center of San Diego, which also has residential and educational areas.

The economy of Point Loma is fueled primarily by military facilities, commercial businesses and marine recreation such as yachting and deep-sea fishing. Marine activities are primarily focused on the Bay (eastern) side of the peninsula, where three yacht clubs are located, including the San Diego Yacht Club (home of the America’s Cup from 1988-1995). There are half a dozen small boat marinas on the eastern side along with a commercial dock used for sport fishing cruises and whale watching expeditions.

Point Loma’s public schools belong to San Diego Unified School District and include Point Loma High School, two middle schools and seven elementary schools.
